Yo-Yo Ma on Learning Incrementally. Beautiful.
Want an educational jolt? Watch the first four minutes of Yo-Yo Ma’s Tiny Desk performance, where he follows up his opening with commentary about how he learned to play cello. He talks about being four-years-old (!) practicing one bar a day of Bach’s Prelude (from Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello) until he started to realize a pattern in the music:
…like yesterday, slightly different. So, it’s actually not painful to learn something if you do it incrementally.
We should all welcome such educational epiphanies. Thank you, Mr. Ma.
