Why Am I Saying to Forget the Screen When Talking About Screentime?

I had the pleasure of presenting on screentime at the Literacy Research Association last week. In discussions about how to research screentime, my advise was a bit counterintuitive: forget the screen. What I mean is that there are super-screenic literacy practices (those that occur above the screen mostly with multimodal human languages) and sub-screenic literacy practices (those that occur below the screen with human and computational languages). The two are dialectically related. The screen is a distraction, a piece of glass.

Forget the screen and focus on how the super- and sub-screenic literacies inform each other.
