You Do You, Music Nerds. So Says Neuroscience.
Nothing but love for the singers.
I remember when reading Oliver Sack’s Musicophilia years ago being struck by one of the stories he told. He described a man who had a degenerative brain disease and lost most communicative functions like speech and facial expression. But when you put on a song he knew, he would sing and light up. There is something universally powerful about music. It’s a wonder that we don’t actively try to use it in teaching and learning more routinely (Yo-Yo Ma has something to say about it).
Let’s try raising our awareness of the brain on music. Start by watching this TEDEd video. Talk about it with the learners in your lives. And try something new, musically new.
