Try Turning Classroom Talk into Writing with This
It's like a relay race, but with writing and thinking.
As more and more schools turn their attention to teaching writing, I wanted to create easier ways for teachers to begin adding writing to their practice. It can be overwhelming and intimidating to do so, even for English teachers. I shared one example previously. Here’s another I call Relay Write. Instead of giving students 3-4 minutes to have a table or group discussion, use a Relay Write to have them write their conversation instead. Remember to make the question or prompt one that naturally lends itself to multiple perspectives and nuance. (Students have to have something to write about and respond to.) And, use a timer to keep the pace of the writing up–like 1-2 minutes max per writer. See what you think.
