Credits
In today’s digital ecosystems, it can be challenging to ensure that the right people get the right credit: readers who share artifacts to post, photographers whose images are used throughout the site, writers whose clips appear. I take seriously to give credit where credit is due. I should also mention that the Web is full of gray areas, in part by design. For example, there are websites that artists opt into to share their work in order to get their names out and do not request compensation or even attribution. Or, when I reached out to a contact at a big media company about securing rights to use a brief clip from television, I was told to use my best judgement and be responsive if someone complains. If you have any questions or concerns about how credit is given on the site, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via Twitter @tomliamlynch. With that said, below are the main places I secure most of the media used on the site, unless otherwise noted.
Photos
The majority of original photos come from a curation site for designers called Makerbook. What they do, is they partner with other similar organizations to make artists’ work available to a wider audience–with the artists’ permission. Artists might receive in return a direct donation from users or they get their work out into the world. Check out Makerbook’s Photography page for more information. (The image of Tom looking off into the air was actually taken by his son, Declan.)
Video
I only use video when it is posted on YouTube or Vimeo, relying on their inherent copyright detection software as a filter. I do capture still images of Youtube or Vimeo videos to upload to posts, which my WordPress theme requires to present the post as a video to readers. Sometimes links break, so if you ever spot one, please let me know.
Affiliate Links
Some links on the site are affiliate links, which help me offset the costs associated with running the site. Thanks in advance for your support.
