Let’s Not Confuse Annotations and Marginalia

Observing a middle school English class recently, I was struck by how mechanical annotating one’s reading had become. I do respect the need to teach students in steps how to actively read. But teachers should not mistake such annotating for the end. No, what we are really after is marginalia. See here what Edgar Allen Poe had to say on the matter.
